Hot Carob Mix (AKA Failsafe Hot Chocolate)

Enjoy a failsafe version of hot chocolate with this hot carob mix. All you need to do is add milk and you have a deliciously warm beverage waiting in the wings. Best part is, it’s kid-approved.

I know this is probably considered a little weird, but I have never been a coffee (or a tea) drinker. The only thing I actually liked about coffee is the place where it’s sold. You know, coffee shops. Pre-COVID, I loved sitting in coffee shops for hours upon hours, talking with friends and hearing the hum of conversations and coffee being ground.

So to not be able to drink coffee on a FAILSAFE diet wasn’t much of an issue for me. Or tea for that matter.

Apple cider, on the other hand, is a drink of the gods. And was my go-to drink for 9 months out of the year. I knew it didn’t agree with me towards the end, but honestly I didn’t care. I also didn’t have much to replace it with since coffee and tea were off the table. I would occasionally reach for a hot chocolate but could never drink it day in and day out.

The problem is, when you have ZERO options, you start to crave what you can’t have. And I began to crave warm beverages like crazy. I remembered having hot cocoa mix on hand for the kids and knew that it would be super easy to whip some up with carob powder.

The best part about this mix (other than it being FAILSAFE) is that it’s basically fool proof. AND you can use whatever milk works best for you. I prefer it with oat or soy milk because they are a bit thicker. Rice milk is a bit too thin for this one, but can certainly be used if that’s what you like!

Also, if you find that you are reacting to carob, try a lightly roasted or raw variety and see if you tolerate that better. I found that I do best with a lightly roasted carob. Raw just smells a bit too much like dirty feet to me and it’s hard to get past. 😂
